The Stakes of the Altruism Series

Science Fiction, Realism, and Inventions

The « Altruisme » series is a 5-book science-fiction saga. The first two volumes are firmly rooted in hard sci-fi, while the following three shift toward space opera. The overall plot and major events have been planned in advance to ensure complete narrative coherence. I do not write the story as I go along, except for certain details and backgrounds.

I wanted each of the five books to tell different stories and explore different contexts, while still being logical extensions of one another.

The first volume, Ascension, sets up the universe and the characters. As a result, it unfortunately leaves less room for the main plot, which is still being built at this stage.

The second volume, Expansion, advances much further into the stakes and difficulties.

The Importance of Realism

Realism is extremely important in this series — it is even in the name « Altruisme ». I refused to write a story set in a universe where anything can happen through magic, superpowers, or pure narrative convenience. There are no faster-than-light travels without explanation, no gigantic structures built in a few days, and no shields that protect ships with unexplained percentages dropping.

However, I am convinced that I have created original concepts within the science-fiction genre. For example, you will discover in Expansion a realistic and coherent way to build spaceships over time using available materials.

Why “Altruisme”?

The series lives up to its name through its two main characters, who constantly think about others:

Elena, in particular, reaches out to the people around her and helps them as much as she can. It is her kind heart that drives her forward.

I chose to structure the books with chapters named after characters (in the style of A Song of Ice and Fire), with incremental numbering per character.
