An Absolute Favorite and a Masterclass in Writing

Babylon 5 remains for me a true favorite — a series that deeply inspired me.

It is one of the finest examples of what television science fiction can offer when a story is fully thought out and written from beginning to end before even filming the pilot. J. Michael Straczynski built a narrative thread of rare coherence and power across five seasons.

More Than Manichaeism

I love the way he handles the notion of good and evil. Between the Vorlons and the Shadows, nothing is ever purely black or white. These two ancient races, initially presented as opposing forces, ultimately share the same authoritarian vision of progress… only with different methods. The two mythical questions — “Who are you?” and “What do you want?” — become the philosophical heart of the series and resonate far beyond the screen.

2260 or 1984?

The series also dares to show how a democracy can slide into the most chilling dictatorship. The arc of the Earth Alliance and its Ministry of Truth is a brilliant and terrifying reimagining of 1984, perfectly integrated into the universe.

At the center of it all, John Sheridan is a strong and charismatic character, without ever being omniscient or omnipotent. He doubts, makes difficult choices, assumes his responsibilities, and above all knows how to rely on his crew. Without his loved ones and his team, he would be nothing. This humility and humanity make him deeply relatable.

And Much More...

Finally, the time loop involving Babylon 4 is a model of perfectly executed time travel: prepared from the very first season, it closes without the slightest contradiction. A rare example of narrative coherence that commands respect.

The duo of G’Kar and Londo: I have never seen such quality of writing and depth in a pair of characters.

Verdict

Babylon 5 is a cult, visionary, and timeless series. If you are looking for an ambitious, philosophical, and magnificently constructed work of science fiction, **it is simply a must-watch**.
