Earth Star Voyager: A Forgotten Disney Gem That Inspired Altruism
A Hidden 1980s Disney Treasure
Earth Star Voyager is a gem that has aged, doesn’t look like much at first glance, and doesn’t try to impress — but it’s genuinely well written. These two TV movies, which I watched several times as a kid (thank you, VHS!), inspired me enormously.
Broadcast in 1988 on Disney, it is in reality a 3-hour pilot in two parts, directed by James Goldstone with music by Lalo Schifrin. We follow a dying Earth (unbreathable atmosphere) and a crew of young prodigies setting off on a mission to the planet Demeter aboard the *Quasar Voyager* (or *Earth Star Voyager* in the original version, to keep the syllable count).
The AI That Inspired Zara
The journey lasts decades… which naturally leads to a young and inexperienced crew, especially after the accidental death of the elderly captain.
Honestly, I have to admit that the concept of the central computer *Priscilla* helped shape my idea of an artificial intelligence like Zara, capable of managing an entire spaceship. Priscilla isn’t just a voice — she is the brain of the ship. She manages everything, interacts with the crew, and saves them. In 1988, that was visionary!
Reboot or Remake?
It’s a shame there was never a full series, because the concept of a young (because the journey is long) and inexperienced crew could have led to great adventures: space pirates, saboteurs, cyborgs, betrayals, but also everyday life moments aboard a ship over the years. It had the feel of a *Star Trek: The Next Generation*-style adventure series, but with gifted teenagers.
Visionary?
Today, in 2026, with AI everywhere, this TV movie takes on a whole new dimension. It already shows what we experience with Zara: an AI that doesn’t just obey, but accompanies, pilots, and protects. If you grew up with Saturday night Disney VHS tapes, you know exactly what I mean.
Who else watched Earth Star Voyager on TV or on cassette? Let me know in the comments if Priscilla marked you as much as she did me! And if a platform ever revives the project… I’m signing up immediately for the series.
